Not to drop a bomb or anything, but yes, 8th edition will be out next summer with a new boxed set in the fall. I’ve heard Empire vs. Orks in the box with a new O&G book out in Q1 2010. Plastic Empire Knights and Orc Boar boys will be in the new set I’ve heard. They keep one-upping themselves with the box sets so I would expect a mountain of amazing plastics in the new starter set.

Sounds about right.

Having seen concept sketches for the new Knights and Brians work on the new boars I am fairly excited about this.

8th ed could sort out some stuff, but if O&G are to come out in Q1 then BoC might get postponed. I would not mind a new edition of the rules, but I don't want to wait for my army book.

I don't want the army book to be broken by an update to the rules either.
Damn them people over in England for making me read this before breakfast.

Well then....does it mean beast herds will rank 5 wide only long enough for 8th edition to make the rank minimum 6 wide? tongue.gif

QUOTE (Harry;4087404)
That would be quite funny. biggrin.gif Although, not so much for beast players.

Could be they will be the first army to take into account the 8th edition changes.

(I feel like the Skaven might have beat them to this).

I'd say that's a solid 100% confirmation of beasts for Feb.

Yeah the way I read it we were and still are slated for a Feb release. Will suit us well to get pushed right before the new rules - if Skaven were first to take advantage of them I'd like to see how we benefit from any changes. Could give us an edge until the other books get updated.

What changes in the Skaven book lend it to new rules? The template-hits-all is the only one I can think of, and beasts don't stand to gain anything there. Surely magic is due for a revision though?

I myself think this is stupid. The problem with this edition is particular lists not the core rules. So the same problems with VCs and DoC will remain.

Sixth and seventh were very similar the typical life span of a WFB edition is about 4 years. So we are getting close to that time span.

Subtle changes in seventh I think shifted the army balances (skirmishers got worse in particular which meant that the overpowered army of the end of sixth -wood elves - got weaker)

Magic is probably the worst offender. Ever turned up to a battle with 2 lvl2's vs 8 levels of magic and not managed to cast a single spell in the game? "Might as well just bring a scroll caddy or two next game."

Eliminate that all or nothing-ness and you go a long way to fixing one of the biggest problems of the game.

Other than that, there are a lot of little tweaks that could be done. Clarifying what is a model in regards to things that effect a model and multi-part models, fixing the monster and handler rules, depowering autobreak. Perhaps depowering large flyers. Be nice if they could do something to reduce the movement penalties for infantry in terrain; it's all basically no-go areas for ranked units at the moment, which boosts the power of combat skirmishers and other manouverable units.

Hopefully they will bring decent missions/scenarios back too. They are the best way to limit deathstar units or armies that rely on specific builds to break the dynamic of the game, like knight-heavy. or chariot heavy, or static gunlines etc. The focus of the game should be on ranked infantry, so make them the guys who achieve victory through taking and holding etc. The other guys like cav, skirmishers, monsters etc could be your strike power but unable to hold any points themselves.

I saw a cool idea for 8th edition on Warseer. Make rank bonus different for your base size - 20mm has 5 wide, 25mm has 4 wide, 40mm has 3 wide. 50mm or larger can't join units or are classfied as monsters.

Update from Dosadi on Warseer:
QUOTE
Yes, as most have figured out I had a brain fart and typed 2010 when I meant 2011.

I’ll reiterate what I’ve said several times here and elsewhere. Anything outside of 6 months is at best informed speculation. I will back up what Harry has said and can confirm with 99% certainty that O&G and Empire will be the two armies in the 8th edition Starter Set and it will be out in September 2010. The 8Th edition hardcover however will be out in June, after Beastmen who will be the last 7th edition army, but not really 7th edition just as Skaven aren’t really 7th edition. wink.gif
