You know that strange, interesting piece of information people occasionally share over lunch? Those really bizarre facts that make you think "ooh that's kinda interesting". Well, I saw a thread on another forum that was dedicated to those! So whenever you hear something strange or unusual, or just a bit cool, post it here

Some things I found out today:

An octopus has three hearts.

Ursalia and Efisga were two of the suggested names for the counrty that is now Canada.

Sound travels 15 times faster through steel than through the air.

and despite popular belief, you do NOT get stomach cramps from swimming too soon after eating. That is an old wives' tale proven to be false

Ooh just heard that a pig's orgasm lasts about 30 minutes

Random Facts:

Potato Chips were invented on accident

The Chinese figured out how to use a rocket as a weapon about 800 years ago (arrow tied to rocket= death)

Some people modify sit-down lawn mowers for racing- it becomes their sport/hobby

Their is an Alligator Wrestling school in the United States (somewhere in the south obviously)

Cougars a mountain-cat for those who don't know) sees in pixellated vision.

In Sweden, the names "Helmi" and "Gurli" will disappear from the "Names Day Calender" in 2011... What the hell, never heard of them names...

Pretty sure that's a myth...

I would say they both were beaten by several others, where the viking Leifr Eiríksson should at least get mentioned...

Might indeed be a myth Garganthor, seems like one of those things that would, and yes agreed about the vikings, but even fewer people know about the chinese. Actually some more interesting facts on them:

As WGS mentioned, contrary to popular belief the chinese used gunpowder for more than entertaining fireworks

Gunpowder was invented by taoist monks

Geez, I'm full of this non-sense, but I can't think of any on command like that..

Grarrzag is full of this non-sense, but he can't think of any on command like that..

Man I did a Mythbusters Marathon and watched every episode. I was loaded with random facts, but now I can't remember any of them

I'll have to watch them again...

Here are a few that I know of:

- elephants are the only mammal that cannot jump

- more people fear public speaking than fear death

- insects eat almost 10% of all food produced in the world

- the tongue is the only muscle in the body that is only attached at one end

- the hangy down thing in the back of your throat is called a "uvula"

- the english word with the most definitions is "set"
