Nothing happened on that batch of eggs so I tryed another 15 eggs last sunday, but this time in spring bottled water, like some say to use. One egg hatched that i could see on 2 nd day and has grown alot and is still alive. It is the 6th day after starting this batch of 15 eggs and I only have the one male or female. I hope its a female because then I can get eggs from her to hatch more, otherwise I gotta send away for more eggs from the company. Im going to put her in a bigger container tommorow and wil use distilled water for that. Very interesting looking and acting already. I think by the size he grew at on 2nd day he or she, might have eat the other eggs in tank .

They certainly love to eat each other. I remember one time I thought that two of them were going to co-exist. They were both the same size and about an inch long. Then, I found one with the other in his mouth! The survivor went in my pond in the summer and lived until the cold came. That was the first year of my pond I think so my fish were small. It seems they really need the distilled water to hatch well but are more tolerant of regular water (like in my pond) once older.

It is day 8 now and the triop is about a inch long. I think it is real cool to watch. I ran out of spring bottled water and started to use distilled water from my demutifier for water for the bigger container i put her in. You must have read my mind because i was goingto ask if I can use regular tap water now once they have hatched or keep using distilled water.

Well, my pond water was/is composed of mostly very soft water and rain water. If your tap water has chlorine, heavy metals nitrate, phosphate, carbonates, and a lot of hardness, it could very well prove deadly for the triops. I would stick to the distilled (or reverse osmosis) water is possible, followed by spring water or rain water otherwise. If you have soft tap water with very little in it, the triops might be able to survive in it. Dechlorinator will help with some contaminants but not the hardness.

I have a 1 triop that is 2 weeks old now. I have kept the water at 76 degrees like they say for hatching eggs. What temperature can they survive at now once they are older?? My house is usually around 68 during the day and 65 at night. I cant find any info on what temp the water should be once they are older. Iv been running a 40watt light bulb beside triops tank 24/7 for 2 weeks. I am trying to think of another set up to keep it in. Iv got it in the small container they give with the kit .

Wow, they grow pretty fast huh. I've watched some youtube videos to see what they looked like and they are pretty awesome swimming around like they do. We never did the triops thing when the kids were little. We did the SEA MONKEYS instead. I guess I was always intriged by the cartoon character with the crown on his head. laugh.gif And they look nothing like that. What a disappointment!! laugh.gif

From what I understand they live from 30 to 90 days. Very interesting creatures.

My biggest triops, I put in my pond in the summer. I don't know exactly when he died but I think they can survive in the 60's degrees F. Of course, at the warmer temperatures, he'll eat more and grow more. I suspect that one benefit of a cooler setup would be that he lives a little bit longer (as long as it's not too cold). How big is he now?

I have an old sea monkeys kit from the 60's that shows the king monkey with his crown, his bride, and all the regular monkeys all around his castle. How many kids were dissapointed when they got brine shrimp! tongue.gif

Did you see this great photo of a triops from Arizona that someone sent me a few years ago?

Very cool picture. Thanks. It is about a 1 inch and a quarter long right now and is 2 weeks old. Wish I had more hatch to make sure I have some females to lay eggs and make a triops farm of sort. Its colour is kinda grey right now but im sure it will change colour in awhile. I washed some sand out and will put more sand in the container hoping its a female to lay eggs. I usually take things to the max, like my goldfish in which I have about 70 right now but did have about 225 a few years ago. Summer was cold here in n.w. ontario and I didnt get not even 1 baby goldfish out of m pond. Some summers I have pulled out 100 or so about a inch long. Bad summer for anything to grow here this year, even my grass looked terrible.
